Lightning strikes represent a major disruption and cost in the operation of Wind turbines (WTs). One of the main reasons is the remote location and consequent expensive servicing if a WT malfunctions due to lightning strikes, which especially applies to offshore wind farms. The increasing blade lengths and size of WTs in the last few years has furthermore led to a spike in the occurrence of lightning strikes. A lightning strike offshore can cost up to €1.5 million when accounting for the expenses related to crane vessel, offshore repair operations and loss in energy production. The main objective in the project is to further develop and commercialize a disruptive lightning protection system (LPS) for WTs that effectively surpasses existing solutions. The technology developed by GLPS is patent pending and constitutes of 3 main elements: a tip receptor, a down conductor cable and a pair of side receptors. The technology is ground-breaking as it has been developed and tested to ensure 100% interception effectiveness of the lightning strikes at the tip of the blade, when testing according to existing and future standards (IEC 61400-24 Ed2.0 expected 2018).
The main objectives of this innovation project are:
GLPS will act as single company in the innovation project. We have all the required in-house competencies related to engineering, development, testing, business strategy planning and sales capacity. Therefore, we are capable of bringing this project from its current stage to a commercial product.
There will be a strong relation with the following companies for the manufacturing of the product: SkanTech Aps, and Tindby A/S to supply molds and casting. Contacts will be also initiated with other partners for production outside Europe (e.g. China, US and South America).
GLPS is becoming an industry leader regarding lightning protection and has existing and very strong collaborations with the most important OEMs. These OEMs will engage the project for the demonstration of the LPS product. .
